Students from Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, once again achieved success in the North Countries Universities Mathematical Competition (NCUMC), an international mathematics Olympiad held in Russia at the end of March 2023. This time, Ferdi and Zidan Nadif Ramadhan, who are students of the Mathematics program in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA), won the silver medal (2nd place).
Ferdi explained that this international competition was conducted both online and offline at ITMO University in Russia. The competition consisted of two categories: individual and team. “We participated in this competition both online and offline, and we competed in both the individual and team categories. However, our team ranked seventh,” explained Ferdi, a student from the 2020 cohort, to the reporters on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. Furthermore, Ferdi explained that the competition consisted of a single test stage. After the test, the organizers immediately released the scores and ranking. As for the preparation, Ferdi admitted that they didn’t have specific preparations because they were busy preparing for the National Science Olympiad. Nevertheless, Ferdi mentioned that he gained valuable experience and practice from this competition. “The challenge was that we participated in this competition online, so we didn’t feel as challenged. Hopefully, in the future, the university can support us to participate in this competition offline in Russia,” Ferdi expressed his hope. Despite that, Ferdi acknowledged that they received a lot of assistance from their supervising professors from the Department of Mathematics, especially from Dr. Andi Muhammad Anwar S.Si, M.Si, who served as their mentor. “The alumni also always support us in studying the Olympiad materials, as we know that the Olympiad materials are more advanced compared to regular class materials,” he added.
