The Hasanuddin University Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) held The 3rd International Conference on Science (ICOS). The conference was held in collaboration with the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS), the Indonesian Physics Association (HFI), the Indonesian Geophysical Expert Association (HAGI), the Indonesian Chemical Association (HKI), and the Indonesian Biological Consortium. The conference takes place on Friday-Saturday, 26-27 July 2019 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Makassar.
This third International Conference presents keynote speakers with an amazing international reputation. The keynote speakers are:
Prof. Jalifah bint Latip from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa from the Faculty of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at Diponegoro University, who is also the Director of Research and Community Service, Kemenristekdikti.
Prof. Ian R. Young from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
Prof. Kenseng Tan, Ph.D from University of pf Waterloo, Canada.
The Second ICOS Committee, Prof. Dr. Ivan Azis, M.Sc. explained that ICOS 2019 was the 3rd science meeting in Makassar. Every event, the number of participants continues to increase. In the first ICOS in 2014, 71 papers were published in the Proceedings, while the second ICOS in 2017, as many as 97 papers were published.
“After the 3rd ICOS, the committee accepted 284 abstracts. However, the committee adopted a multilevel selection system, beginning with a pre-review. At the initial stage, the committee assessed the similiarity and suitability of the paper format. Finally, only 260 papers were accepted for presentation,” said Prof. Ivan Azis.
To make room for researchers, the executive committee also prepared a scheme for presentations in the form of posters. A total of 20 researchers participated in this poster session.
Since the second ICOS and also for this third ICOS, the paper presented is published in the proceedings indexed by Scopus. This has a significant impact on increasing the articles of work of the Unhas academic community indexed by Scopus. ICOS paper was published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS) published by IOP. JPCS is listed as a Q3 publication on Scimago.
In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muh. Restu, MP said that organizing ICOS by the MIPA Faculty as the host is a manifestation of Unhas’ commitment in academic and research activities.
“Unhas always provides support for this activity, as a form of commitment in becoming part of the development of science and technology. We really appreciate the efforts made by leaders and lecturers at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences who initiated this activity continuously,” said Prof. Restu represented the Rector of Unhas. Konferensi ini diselenggarakan bekerja sama dengan Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS), Himpunan Fisika Indonesia (HFI), Himpunan Ahli Geofisika Indonesia (HAGI), HImpunan Kimia Indonesia (HKI), dan Konsorsium Biologi Indonesia. Konferensi berlangsung pada Jum’at-Sabtu, 26-27 Juli 2019 di Hotel Four Points by Sheraton, Makassar.
Konferensi Internasional yang ketiga ini menghadirkan keynote speaker dengan reputasi internasional yang mengagumkan. Para keynote speaker tersebut adalah:
- Prof. Jalifah binti Latip dari Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
- Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa dari Fakultas Kelautan dan Ilmu Perikanan Universitas Diponegoro, yang juga merupakan Direktur Riset dan Pengabdian Masyarakat, Kemenristekdikti.

Kedua Panitia The 3rd ICOS, Prof. Dr. Ivan Azis, M.Sc. menjelaskan bahwa ICOS 2019 merupakan ajang pertemuan bidang sains yang ke-3 di Makassar. Setiap hajatan penyelenggaraan, jumlah peserta terus mengalami peningkatan. Pada ICOS pertama tahun 2014, sebanyak 71 paper dipublikasi dalam Prosiding, sementara ICOS kedua tahun 2017, sebanyak 97 paper dipublikasikan.
“Pasda ICOS ke-3 ini, panitia menerima 284 abstrak. Namun, panitia menerapkan sistem seleksi bertingkat, diaawali dengan pre-review. Pada tahapan awal, panitia menilai similiarity dan kesesuaian format paper. Akhirnya, hanya 260 paper yang diterima untuk dipresentasikan,” kata Prof. Ivan Azis.
Untuk memberi ruang bagi para peneliti, panitia pelaksana juga menyiapkan skema untuk presentasi dalam bentuk poster. Sebanyak 20 peneliti berpartisipasi dalam sesi poster ini.
Sejak ICOS kedua dan juga untuk ICOS ketiga ini, paper yang dipresentasikan dipublikasi pada prosiding yang terindeks Scopus. Hal ini berdampak signifikan bagi peningkatan artikel karya civitas akademika Unhas yang terindeks Scopus. Paper ICOS dipublikasikan pada Journal fo Physics: Conference Series (JPCS) yang diterbitkan oleh IOP. JPCS tercatat sebagai publikasi Q3 di Scimago.
Dalam sambutanya pada pembukaan, Wakil Rektor Bidang Akademik, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muh. Restu, MP mengatakan bahwa penyelenggaraan ICOS oleh Fakultas MIPA sebagai tuan rumah merupakan wujud komitmen Unhas dalam aktivitas akademik dan riset.
“Unhas selalu memberikan dukungan terhadap kegiatan ini, sebagai wujud komitmen dalam menjadi bagian perkembangan ilmu dan teknologi. Kami sangat mengapresiasi upaya yang dilakukan pimpinan dan dosen-dosen di Fakultas MIPA yang menggagas kegiatan ini secara kontinyu,” kata Prof. Restu mewakili Rektor Unhas. (mirayanti Unhas)
