Hasanuddin University students have once again achieved national-level accomplishments in the field of mathematics. Four students from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) garnered a number of medals at the Mathematical Analysis and Geometry Day (MagD) event held by Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). MagD is an annual competition in the field of analysis and geometry for undergraduate students. The competition is organized by the Analysis and Geometry Expert Group of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at ITB. The competition has been held since 2008 and is participated by several reputable universities across Indonesia.
In this May-held competition, Unhas students collected five medals in two competition categories, namely individual and team. Ferdi, a student from Unhas, won the gold medal in the individual competition category. Not only that, Zidan Nadif Ramadhan also secured a silver medal, while Muhammad Ahnaf Yusuf received a bronze medal.
As for the team category, Unhas was represented by two teams, team one (Ferdi and Zidan Nadif Ramadhan) and team two (Muhammad Ahnaf Yusuf and Usmaria). Team one achieved third place, winning a bronze medal. One of the participating students, Ferdi, explained that the preliminary round of the competition was conducted online for the top 35 participants. The subsequent competition stage took place offline at the ITB campus. Despite not facing significant challenges during the competition, Ferdi mentioned that he and his team encountered financial obstacles to participate in the competition in Bandung due to the considerable accommodation expenses required.
“However, with the help of the university, we were able to travel to Bandung to participate in the competition,” explained Ferdi. As an experienced student who has participated in many competitions, Ferdi, representing his colleagues, expressed hope that the university would continue to provide support, both financially and in terms of guidance, for future competitions. “Because we cannot excel in mathematics competitions without assistance from the university,” he added.
For information, Ferdi and Zidan recently won a silver medal (2nd place) at the North Countries Universities Mathematical Competition (NCUMC), an international-level mathematical olympiad held in Russia at the end of March 2023.
